Last year reached an all-time high in the number of exposed records from reported data breaches. The previous highest record was set in 2013. Recent study reveals that 4,149 data breach cases leaked 4.2 billion records in 2016. It is the number of records that increased not so much the number of breaches. Only 94 breaches compromised about half the records — 2.2. billion. About half of reported breaches exposed only between 1 and 10,000 records.
The most popular breach technique used was hacking while before, stolen laptops had been predominant.
It seems that misconfigured databases will continue to be problematic in 2017 as well.
